Tell Secretary Pete Buttigieg to ban the transportation of explosive liquefied natural gas by rail to protect our communities and the climate!

Dear Secretary Buttigieg,

We write to you now with growing concern that a Trump-era rule to fast-track the transportation of highly explosive liquefied natural gas (LNG) by rail remains in place, endangering our communities, water, and climate.

Liquefied Natural Gas

LNG is a dangerous, highly unstable, and explosive substance. Right now, the gas industry wants to take advantage of Trump-era rules that allow the transportation of volatile LNG by rail from northeast Pennsylvania to an export facility in Gibbstown, NJ on the Delaware River.

This will put the communities along the route at risk from explosions and threaten the drinking water of over 13 million people, and if successful, could be the first of many along the Eastern seaboard.

The Trump Administration also recklessly granted the gas industry a permit to transport LNG by rail in Miami Dade and Broward County, Florida, endangering residents throughout the region.

What You Should Know About Liquefied Natural Gas

What is liquefied natural gas?

LNG is a liquefied natural gas – composed of mostly methane, and almost always extracted by fracking.

How does LNG endanger communities?

When the gas is supercooled to -260 degrees fahrenheit, it becomes a bubbling, explosive liquid. If the liquid spills, it can turn into rapidly expanding clouds of vapor capable of flash-freezing human flesh. LNG vapors can become uncontrollable fires that are so hot that they can burn people up to a mile away.

How does LNG contribute to the climate crisis?

LNG is disastrous for climate change. Fracking for the gas releases large amounts of methane, a potent driver of the climate crisis. Liquefying, transporting, and re-gasifying it releases even more emissions – making emissions from LNG as bad as coal. UN climate scientists and other leading experts warn that methane emissions must be reduced to avert the most harmful impacts of climate change.

What is LNG by rail?

The gas industry wants to recklessly ship LNG on old rail lines through neighborhoods and cities to LNG facilities that send the gas overseas. This is very dangerous and threatens communities and the environment. Just 22 LNG rail cars would have the explosive power of the Hiroshima bomb.

How can Secretary Buttigieg stop LNG
by rail?

Secretary Buttigieg’s Department of Transportation (DOT) is now reviewing the rule that the Trump Administration fast-tracked without considering the grave risks and potential impacts. Now, Secretary Buttigieg and the DOT have the opportunity to ban LNG by rail, protecting our communities and the climate.
